Frequently Asked Questions

Savana Santa Ana grass is a triploid couch with a beautiful fine leaf and a deep root system. It does not set pollen, so great for those with allergies. It thrives in the summer heat here in WA and is very hardy for foot traffic, sports and ideal for pets. It is predominantely used on tees of golf courses due to having an extremely fine upright leaf structure. It is a popular choice of lawn because of its durability and performance, without the need for lots of water. It is very dormant during Winter and thrives in full sun.

Santa Ana grass looks spectacular when maintained correctly. The main benefit above other varieties is that it does not set pollen and it performs extremely well with minimal water, fertiliser and maintenance.

If you have asthma and allergies pollen is not your friend! Savana Santa Ana couch is the perfect choice here in WA as it is a triploid couch which does not set any pollen but with the benefits of having a beautifull appearance and having a deep root system to search for water and nutrients. It is both soft and hard wearing.

The best time to install Savana Santa Ana grass is when the ground temperature is warm which assists the turf to establish a root system quickly. So here in Perth, WA during Spring, Summer or Autumn is best, although it will establish over Winter if you want to make use of the free rainfall, if you don’t mind waiting a little longer for the turf to establish. Having good soil that retains water is key to the performance of any lawn, which you can do by incorporating compost, manures, clay, blood and bone, soil wetters. A good reticulation system where the water sprays cross each other so no areas miss out on water is also very important!

During the hotter months Savana Santa Ana grass would establish in three weeks, and would be ready for its’ first light mow. If planted in Winter, it would take 6-8 weeks to establish. It is entirely weather-dependent, so the cooler the ground temperature, the longer the turf will take to establish

To establish Savana Santa Ana couch grass, it is recommended to apply 10ml three times per day (preferably 6am, 10am and 2pm). It is not recommended to water the turf when there is no evaporation, so the last water should be done at the hottest time of the day. In WA, it is also recommended to use Soil Wetters as part of your watering regime to assist with water absorbtion and retention. In Winter, if there is frost, it is recommended to water the turf in the morning to prevent leaf burn, but here in WA frost is minimal and there is generally sufficient rainfall to keep the plant happy during its’ dormancy.
